Built by local residents during a period of population growth, it later served as a church auxiliary hall, a library and a neighborhood association home. It is also a well-preserved example of a plain 19th-century vernacular schoolhouse on the Outer Cape.","narrative":"Pond Hill School is a two-story, clapboard-sided schoolhouse built in 1857 on a hill above Drummer Cove in South Wellfleet. Plain Greek Revival in style, it has a three-bay facade, a center entry, simple board trim and a gable roof. A one-story addition from 1952 holds bathrooms and storage, and a small privy stands behind it. Local men built the school on a shares basis for $1,646.87, using Maine lumber that a resident captain carried by schooner. It was the last of twelve district schoolhouses in Wellfleet. The upper floor served as a winter class for young fishermen, including navigation instruction. The town closed the school in 1880, and in 1888 the Ladies Social Union bought it for $100 and used it as a hall. A library has occupied the second floor since 1912. Its long community use and well-kept original appearance support its local importance in education, architecture and social history.","period_of_significance":"1857-1880; 1888-ca. 1930","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a meeting hall and library; the second floor has been a library since 1912.
