It is also significant architecturally as a rare, fine local example of an Italianate mixed-use building with two projecting corner bay windows and a drive-through bay.","narrative":"Built in 1877 on the southeast corner of 8th and Chester Streets in West Oakland, this two-story wood-frame building began as the Western Market, a butcher shop with the owner's family living upstairs. Its Italianate design includes a bracketed cornice, hooded windows, quoins, two octagonal corner bay windows with umbrella-like roofs, and a drive-through bay leading to a rear stable. The architect and builder are unknown. In 1925 the local chapter of Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association bought the property, named it Liberty Hall and converted it to a lodge hall with an auditorium in 1928. A fire damaged it in 1931. A one-story annex followed in 1932, and the building later served as a branch of Father Divine's Peace Mission, known for inexpensive banquets during the Depression. It was listed for its role in Black ethnic heritage and for its architecture. After years of vacancy it was in poor condition.","period_of_significance":"1925-1938","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as in poor condition, with broken windows, weathered exterior and water damage after more than ten years of vacancy, vandalism and deferred maintenance.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.570653-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/89000199.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000199/94c0abc6c6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000199/94c0abc6c6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Liberty_Hall_(Oakland,_CA).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Liberty_Hall_(Oakland,_CA).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858260","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Hall_(Oakland,_California)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14683098"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/alameda-county/liberty-hall-89000199/"}
