Three two-story red brick buildings (1901, by 1905, and 1930) are contributing, and a 1956 annex is not.","why_significant":"The complex is the oldest school in continuous use in Eden and reflects Baptist efforts to found schools in North Carolina. Its Colonial Revival and transitional Queen Anne-Colonial Revival buildings represent private and public school architecture of the early twentieth century. The 1930 additions joined the earlier buildings into one monumental complex.","narrative":"Three massive brick school buildings on a ridge in Eden's Highlands neighborhood make up the former Leaksville-Spray Institute, which still serves as an intermediate school for fifth and sixth graders. The oldest part, the 1901 Administration Building, and the Girls Home and President's Residence, finished by 1905, were built for a Baptist-sponsored boarding school that opened in 1906. The school offered classical, music and business courses until debt forced it to become a day school that closed around 1918. The state later leased the buildings, and in 1930 the Leaksville Township Schools bought the property and added an L-shaped classroom and auditorium building that joined the two older structures around a quadrangle. A one-story 1956 annex is not counted as historic. The complex is the oldest continuously used school in Eden and a good example of early twentieth-century Colonial Revival school design in North Carolina.","period_of_significance":"1901-1938","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival; Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as the Leaksville-Spray Intermediate School for fifth and sixth grades.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.930567-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/7220/47722021/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/89000179.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722021","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaksville-Spray_Institute","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19875041"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/rockingham-county/leaksville-spray-institute-89000179/"}
