William T. Roberts, designed and built by an Atlanta architect and contractor whose names are not known.","why_significant":"It is significant in politics and government as the home of Col. William T. Roberts, a mayor, county solicitor, state representative, solicitor general and state senator who later became an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission. It is also significant in architecture as a restrained Classical Revival house with Queen Anne or late Victorian interior detailing, typical of small Georgia towns.","narrative":"Built in 1901 on Campbellton Street in Douglasville, Georgia, this two-story wood frame house was the family home of Col. William T. Roberts. It follows a central hall plan with a full-width front porch and a covered second-floor balcony. The exterior shows only restrained Classical Revival touches, while the interior, with heart-of-pine woodwork, pocket doors, stained and leaded glass, corner mantels and a built-in conversation area, leans toward Queen Anne and late Victorian taste. Roberts had served as mayor, county solicitor and state representative before building it. While living there he held office as Solicitor General of the Tallapoosa Circuit and as a state senator. In 1914 he was appointed an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission and moved to Washington. Changes in 1979 added aluminum siding, a rear room and a new roof without the original chimneys, yet the house still resembles a 1909 photograph. Since 1986 it has served as a cultural arts center and gallery.","period_of_significance":"1901-1938","architect_builder":"Atlanta architect (name unknown); foreman Mr. Armstead of Atlanta","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Classical Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Used as a Cultural Arts Center and art gallery since 1986; altered in 1979 with aluminum siding, a rear room and removal of the chimneys, but still reads much as it did in a 1909 photograph.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.843872-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/89000153.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000153/bec20f0ec0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000153/bec20f0ec0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Col._William_T._Roberts_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Col._William_T._Roberts_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207894","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col._William_T._Roberts_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q85753265"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/douglas-county/roberts-col-william-t-house-89000153/"}
