It is also tied to Brockton's commercial and industrial expansion, and served as a local social and cultural center.","narrative":"Built in 1888 at the corner of Main Street and Perkins Avenue, this four-story L-shaped brick building anchors the Campello section of Brockton. Its two street fronts use pressed red brick with sandstone stringcourses and lintels, arched upper windows, decorative brick panels, and a corbelled brick cornice beneath a dentilled and bracketed wooden cornice. Ground-floor storefronts retain fluted pilasters and a continuous signboard. A sandstone panel at the angled corner bears the name Franklin. Campello grew around the shoe industry and the railroad, and Main Street served as its commercial spine. Only two substantial commercial buildings from that growth period survive there, this one and the 1871 Kingman Block. The building housed shops, a post office, professional offices, and third-floor Mystic Hall, where recitals and concerts organized by Nellie Packard drew crowds. Fraternal and ethnic groups met on the upper floors. Roger Keith, a Brockton mayor, owned it from 1924 to 1948.","period_of_significance":"1888-1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used for stores, offices and meeting halls by a similar mix of tenants; largely original condition with slight storefront changes and removal of rooftop ornament.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.060197-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/24/7965/63796524/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89000042.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000042/eac217fc92-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000042/eac217fc92-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Franklin_Block,_Brockton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Franklin_Block,_Brockton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796524","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_Block_(Brockton,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5491309"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/plymouth-county/franklin-block-89000042/"}
