Washington Street in Hendersonville, North Carolina, built about 1881 for Laura V. King.","why_significant":"It is one of the few surviving 19th-century dwellings in downtown Hendersonville, in a street area once mainly residential and now becoming commercial. It is a good example of Queen Anne/Italianate houses from the town's late 19th to early 20th century growth. It also illustrates family life, as the Waldrop family, headed by a local physician, owned it from 1897 and later took in boarders.","narrative":"Maple Grove, at 103 S. Washington Street in Hendersonville, is a two-story frame house built around 1881 for Laura V. King, daughter of early businessman Col. Valentine Ripley. Its most distinctive feature is a square three-stage cupola with a concave pyramidal roof. The house combines Queen Anne and Italianate elements, including irregular massing, gables with wide eave returns and brackets beneath the eaves. Inside, a central hall organizes the rooms, and the interior remains simple and largely original. In 1897 Dr. J. G. Waldrop, a local physician with eight children, traded houses with King, and the property has stayed in the Waldrop family. Porches were converted to bedrooms and the dining room was enlarged about 1913 when boarders were taken in. The house is notable as one of the few surviving 19th-century dwellings in downtown Hendersonville, on a street increasingly given over to commercial use, and it remains a residence.","period_of_significance":"c.1881-1929","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne; Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-dwelling residence; the original fabric is described as relatively unchanged and the interior has retained its integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:51.224957-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/5/7180/47718005/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/89000030.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000030/226ddf5b10-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89000030/226ddf5b10-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Mx.
