It is one of the two most distinctive Gothic Revival residences in Wooster and is locally unique for combining Gothic Revival form with Italianate decorative elements. It also retains the highest integrity among Wooster's Gothic Revival houses.","narrative":"Built in 1849, this two and a half story, T-shaped brick house at 340 Bever Street in Wooster combines Gothic Revival massing with Italianate details. It has a cut sandstone foundation, common bond brick walls, a metal roof, and a narrow projecting gabled central bay on a three-bay front. An elliptical arched doorway, segmental-arch windows with metal crowns, and S-shaped brackets in the gable reflect the Italianate influence. A rear wing was added around 1860-65, a Queen Anne porch about 1900, and the wing was raised to two stories in 1919. Inside, the plan is largely unchanged, with oak woodwork and a walnut staircase. A clapboard carriage barn, moved from downtown Wooster before 1870 and once a printing shop for the city's first newspapers, survives with a shed. The house was listed for architecture because it is one of Wooster's two best Gothic Revival houses, is unique locally in its stylistic blend, and has the best integrity among them. The architect and builder are unknown.","period_of_significance":"1849","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival; Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; two outbuildings survive on the property.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:15.025366-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/88003192.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88003192/9711623be9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88003192/9711623be9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"Don O'Brien at Flickr","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gasche_House_-_Wooster_Ohio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Don O'Brien at Flickr</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gasche_House_-_Wooster_Ohio.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991962","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138766083"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/wayne-county/gasche-charles-house-88003192/"}
