It was nominated under Criteria A and C, but the Keeper amended the form so that Architecture is the sole area of significance.","narrative":"Corbin Cabin is a log mountain dwelling built around 1910 by George T. Corbin in Nicholson Hollow, in what is now Shenandoah National Park, Madison County, Virginia. The 22 by 16 foot single-room cabin has saddle and V-notched log construction, stone chimneys, a stone foundation, a tin roof and two lean-tos. Corbin left the property in 1938 after the state purchased the land for the park, and the cabin stood vacant until 1954, when the Potomac-Appalachian Trail Club renovated it as an overnight shelter for hikers. It is reached only by foot trail about 1.5 miles from Skyline Drive. The cabin was listed because it is described as the only intact example of a mountain cabin in the park, typical of homes in the hollow communities that existed before the park was created. Nearby stone walls, fences and building foundations remain from Corbin's farmstead. The listing recognizes Architecture as its area of significance.","period_of_significance":"1909-10","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mountain cabin (saddle and V-notched log construction)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Periodically occupied; maintained and used by the Potomac-Appalachian Trail Club as a back country overnight facility for hikers.
