It is also one of the few relatively unaltered residences in a late 19th and early 20th century neighborhood north of Lufkin's central business district. The area of significance is architecture at the local level.","narrative":"This one-story frame cottage at 304 Paul Street in Lufkin was built between 1910 and 1915 by Richard Abercrombie (1870-1937), a prominent local carpenter, for himself and his wife. It is a late and finely detailed Queen Anne house with drop siding, a hip and gable roof, a corbeled brick chimney, bargeboards and decorative shingles in the gables, and a wraparound porch with turned columns and brackets. A chamfered bay with pendant brackets and stained glass windows adds ornament. Abercrombie moved to another house in 1921, and about that year the M.D. Cavanaugh family bought the property. Cavanaugh ran a taxi, garage and trucking business, and the rear garage was built between 1921 and 1927 to serve it. The house later appeared as apartments on Sanborn map corrections. It is valued for its architecture and as one of the few relatively unaltered homes in an early neighborhood north of downtown. It remains a residence in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Richard Abercrombie","architectural_style":"Victorian Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present condition is listed as good, and the present use is residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.471528-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/9679/40967962/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/88002794.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002794/34bf6de780-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002794/34bf6de780-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abercrombie-Cavanaugh_House_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abercrombie-Cavanaugh_House_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40967962","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107321644"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/angelina-county/abercrombie-cavanaugh-house-88002794/"}
