Significance is architectural, at the local level, even though the original clay tile roof was replaced with composition roofing.","narrative":"Located at 420 Mantooth in Lufkin, this one-story wood frame house is finished in rough stucco and follows a U-shaped plan. Intersecting gable roofs with a flat deck and a narrow mansard roof over the inset porch give it a distinctive profile. The porch has arched openings and two central spiraled Tuscan columns, while the windows are wood double-hung sash. Other details include spiraled pilasters, oval and semicircular transom lights, multipaned casement doors, a curved stepped buttress at the southwest corner, a wrought iron porch railing, an exterior brick chimney and a detached garage. Estimated to date from 1920 to 1927, it appears on the 1927 Sanborn map. City directories link it to the Newsom family, and Mr. Newsom worked for the Lufkin Coca Cola Bottling Company, later as associate manager. The clay tile roof has been replaced, but the house is considered the only small Mediterranean Revival residence remaining in Lufkin, giving it local architectural importance. It remains a residence in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mediterranean Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present condition is stated as good; the property is still used as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.673751-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/9679/40967938/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/88002787.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002787/d3ca3d2c85-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002787/d3ca3d2c85-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newsom-Moss_House,_Lufkin,_TX.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newsom-Moss_House,_Lufkin,_TX.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40967938","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107321654"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/angelina-county/newsom-moss-house-88002787/"}
