The house is a highly intact example of a gambrel-roofed Federal style residence typical of eighteenth-century Long Island. The mill and midden sites have yielded, and may yield, information on how the mills worked and how people lived.","narrative":"This six-acre site in Yaphank, Suffolk County, combines a circa 1790 house with the remains of the mills that supported it. The two-and-one-half-story frame house has a gambrel roof, a three-bay facade, a center chimney and original riven wood shingles. A kitchen wing was added around 1825-1840. Federal details include a sidelighted doorway with reeded pilasters, quarter-circle fan windows and round-arched traceried attic windows. Behind the house stand a barn and three sheds, and nearby are a kitchen midden, a family cemetery and the site of a store and post office. John Homan was granted the right to build a sawmill in 1762 and a gristmill in 1771, and his descendants and the Gerard family operated the mills until they burned in the early twentieth century. The property was recognized as a rare surviving example of a family-run milling complex. The house is now vacant and deteriorating, but its rural setting is preserved within a county park.","period_of_significance":"1762-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["A","C","D"],"status_note":"The house has not been occupied for decades and has deteriorated badly. Floors have broken through, plaster is crumbling, and many doors and windows are boarded up. It lies within a Suffolk County park.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.434766-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002761.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002761/730bd01146-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002761/730bd01146-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Homan-Gerard_House_%26_Mills_-_John_Homan_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Homan-Gerard_House_%26_Mills_-_John_Homan_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322148","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homan-Gerard_House_and_Mills","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5887746"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/homan-gerard-house-and-mills-88002761/"}
