It was the first Quaker meeting house in Orange County and is the oldest religious building in Cornwall. The carriage shed and cemetery are rare surviving parts of a meeting house property.","narrative":"Built in 1790 on a 5.4-acre lot in Cornwall, Orange County, New York, this Quaker meeting house is a rectangular, two-story, post-and-beam frame building on a stone foundation, with a gable roof of patterned metal shingles. Two entrances on the south front once let men and women enter separately for their business meetings, and a movable partition divides the two main rooms. A second-story gallery and early stair rails survive. The property also includes an early five-bay carriage shed and a cemetery holding more than one thousand burials. It was the first Quaker meeting house in Orange County and is the oldest religious building in Cornwall. Members built it after outgrowing the home of David Sands, a Quaker leader. Clapboards and a long porch were added in the 1870s, and a kitchen and bathroom wing in 1920. Quakers have worshipped here without interruption, and the building is valued as a well-preserved example of plain Quaker architecture.","period_of_significance":"Circa 1790-1930","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"No Style (vernacular Quaker meeting house)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"In continuous use by Quakers since 1790; the form says it retains a high degree of historic integrity despite minor alterations and additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.241232-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002751.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002751/fbfc4ef989-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002751/fbfc4ef989-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cornwall_Friends_Meeting_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cornwall_Friends_Meeting_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320612","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornwall_Friends_Meeting_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5171977"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/cornwall-friends-meeting-house-88002751/"}
