It is also the only remaining building with architectural integrity tied to Frederick Bernhard, Dover's most prominent brewer.","narrative":"Built around 1880 at 211 East Front Street in Dover, Ohio, this 2-1/2 story frame house was the home of brewer Frederick Bernhard. It combines an irregular plan, slate roof, pedimented gables, ornamental millwork, and a large bulbous dome over the entry bay that is unique in the county. Inside, the floor plan is largely intact, with a carved walnut mantle, a chestnut staircase, grained pine shutters, and parquet floor borders of several woods. A summer kitchen from about 1890 and a carriage barn built before 1899 remain on the lot. The house is considered one of the most outstanding Queen Anne houses in Dover. It also matters for its link to Bernhard, who took sole control of his brewery in 1878 and led it until retiring in 1899. His brewery across the street has been heavily altered, so the house is the best surviving building tied to his career. The porch balustrade was rebuilt with local cast cement block before 1910, and a restoration was finished in 1985.","period_of_significance":"1880-1909","architect_builder":"Frederick Bernhard (builder); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Restoration completed by the owners in 1985; the property is used for professional commerce.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.661384-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/88002748.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002748/10bb0a32c2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002748/10bb0a32c2-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Roseohioresident","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frederick_Bernhard_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Roseohioresident</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frederick_Bernhard_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991752","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138753367"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/tuscarawas-county/bernhard-frederick-house-88002748/"}
