It was built by German-born brothers John and Anton Willeke, leading bricklayers and stone masons in early San Angelo. Its age, good condition, many original features and associations with important persons support its significance as a vernacular stone building.","narrative":"Built in 1884 at 941 East Harris, this stone house in San Angelo began as a two-room dwelling with a full-width porch. It is a one-story, gable-roofed residence of coursed ashlar stone in a vernacular design. Two stone additions made before 1920 extended the rear and gave the house a T plan, and a later flat-roofed brick addition was attached at a corner of the front facade. The stone sections retain 4/4 wood double-hung windows, while the newer section has 2/2 aluminum windows. The house was constructed by German-born brothers John and Anton Willeke, who were leading bricklayers and stone masons in early San Angelo and built many houses, churches, public and commercial structures there. John Willeke, Jr. later took over the business from his father. The house is regarded as the oldest documented building in the city apart from Fort Concho, and its age, good condition, original features and associations with important builders underpin its architectural significance at the local level.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Willeke Bros","architectural_style":"Stone Vernacular","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Physical condition is described as good; the house has three additions and remains on its original site.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.877433-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/15/9702/40970215/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/88002573.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002573/42a96a972a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002573/42a96a972a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_and_Anton_Willeke_House,_San_Angelo,_TX.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_and_Anton_Willeke_House,_San_Angelo,_TX.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970215","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001363"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/tom-green-county/willeke-john-and-anton-house-88002573/"}
