It has an unusual curved entrance portico, a triangular-site plan and refined public interiors in walnut, marble and terrazzo. Its 1940 exterior eagle relief by Gaetano Cecere, commissioned through the Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts, adds artistic importance.","narrative":"Great Neck's post office, at the corner of Welwyn Road and Shoreward Drive in Great Neck Plaza, is a one-story steel-frame building clad in buff limestone on a granite base. It was designed and built in 1939-40 by William Dewey Foster, a consulting architect to the Treasury's Office of the Supervising Architect, as part of the public works effort of the Great Depression. Its simplified Classical Revival design features a semicircular portico carried on four square piers, a relief sculpture of an eagle and thirteen stars by Gaetano Cecere, and metal grilles with classical patterns. The triangular site produced an unusual pentagonal plan. Inside, a circular vestibule leads to a U-shaped lobby with marble wainscot, terrazzo floors, walnut woodwork, original vents, clock, light fixtures and curved counters. Porticos were rare on 1930s post offices because of cost, and few New York examples have extensive woodwork. The building retains a very high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific dates 1939-40; 1940)","architect_builder":"William Dewey Foster, Consulting Architect","architectural_style":"Classical Revival (austere, streamlined version)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good, with a very high degree of exterior and interior integrity; the form marks it occupied and in government use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.177747-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002526.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002526/742cd7148a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002526/742cd7148a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Great_Neck_NY_Post_Office-1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Great_Neck_NY_Post_Office-1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313723","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Post_Office_(Great_Neck,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7890960"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/us-post-office-great-neck-88002526/"}
