It was one of the first New York post offices designed by a consulting architect rather than the Supervising Architect's office, and it was the first building of a planned Glen Cove civic center. It retains a very high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Brick walls, white marble trim and a three-arched entrance porch mark the Glen Cove Post Office at 2 Glen Cove Street, built in 1932-33 in the center of Glen Cove, Nassau County. Designed by the New York firm Delano and Aldrich, it draws on the early nineteenth-century work of Charles Bulfinch, with a porch of round arches, Doric pilasters and a brick pediment holding a carved eagle. Inside, the lobby is covered in dark-stained oak and lit by lamps topped with brass eagles. The firm was chosen through its earlier ties to the Pratt family. Howard (Harold) Pratt donated the land and paid the architects' fee, and Congresswoman Ruth Baker Pratt helped secure funding. Unlike most post offices of the period, it was not built to a standard federal design but by an outside consulting firm, under a 1930 amendment to the Public Buildings Act. It was the first building in a planned village center that later gained a town hall, firehouse and library. The building remains in superb condition and is still in use.","period_of_significance":"1932-33","architect_builder":"Delano & Aldrich","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as occupied, government-owned, in superb condition, and retaining a very high degree of exterior and interior integrity; the front doors and loading platform were altered in 1957.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.621846-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002525.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002525/f39f1eb2dd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002525/f39f1eb2dd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USPO_Glen_Cove_NY_-_Long_Shot.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USPO_Glen_Cove_NY_-_Long_Shot.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313753","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Post_Office_(Glen_Cove,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7890958"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/us-post-office-glen-cove-88002525/"}
