Tioga Street in Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York, built in 1909-10 and extended in 1935-6. It sits within the DeWitt Park Historic District.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an outstanding example of classically inspired public architecture in New York State, adapting late seventeenth century French Baroque design. It represents the work of Supervising Architect of the Treasury James Knox Taylor, who brought classical and Renaissance forms to federal buildings. It retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Ithaca's post office, at 213 N. Tioga Street, is a limestone-clad building of one and one-half stories on a granite base. Designed by Supervising Architect of the Treasury James Knox Taylor and built in 1909-10, it shows five arched openings divided by paired engaged Ionic columns, a carved frieze, and a balustraded cornice. Its design was modeled on Hardouin-Mansart's Grand Trianon at Versailles, seen in the symmetrical massing, console keystones, paired Ionic columns and roof balustrade. A compatible five-bay brick extension was added in 1935-6. Inside, the lobby has a ribbed barrel-vaulted ceiling, green-veined white marble walls and terrazzo floors. Congress authorized the building in 1902, and it was one of eight New York post offices approved under that act. It is valued as a sophisticated example of Taylor's return to classical forms in federal architecture, and the exterior and much of the interior remain largely intact.","period_of_significance":"1909-1910; 1935-6","architect_builder":"James Knox Taylor","architectural_style":"Classically inspired, adapted from late seventeenth century French Baroque (modeled on the Grand Trianon at Versailles)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed condition is good and the building is occupied and in use by the U.S. Postal Service; the exterior remains almost exactly as originally completed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.389849-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002514.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002514/131aaf7b41-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002514/131aaf7b41-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ithaca_Town_Hall.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ithaca_Town_Hall.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"71000561","name":"De Witt Park Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/de-witt-park-historic-district-71000561/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315180","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Post_Office_(Ithaca,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7890976"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tompkins-county/us-post-office-ithaca-88002514/"}
