Its Colonial Revival design is modeled on Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, which is unusual for post offices of the period. Its grand domed entrance vestibule and varied marble interior are rare among New York State post offices.","narrative":"Far Rockaway's post office at 18-36 Mott Avenue is a two-story brick building with limestone trim, designed in 1935 and completed in 1936 during the federal public works programs of the Depression. Eric Kebbon, a consulting architect to the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury, drew on Thomas Jefferson's Monticello for its domed polygonal central pavilion, pedimented entrance and symmetrical wings. Red brick laid in Flemish bond and original twelve-over-twelve sash mark the exterior. Inside, a circular vestibule has eight Corinthian columns made of three different marbles, a second-floor balcony and a cantilevered stair with a wrought-iron and bronze railing. Few New York State post offices of the period have such a ceremonial entrance space. The building was listed as a well-preserved, unusual example of 1930s post office design. A 1965 rear annex is excluded from the listing.","period_of_significance":"1935-6","architect_builder":"Eric Kebbon, Consulting Architect; Silberblatt and Lasker of New York City (construction contract)","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"The form says the building retains its integrity to a very high degree on both exterior and interior; a 1965 annex at the rear is not part of the nomination. The form marks it as occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.71999-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002500.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002500/208749a12d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002500/208749a12d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Winter","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office-Far_Rockaway_2013-09-29_18-43-34.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Winter</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office-Far_Rockaway_2013-09-29_18-43-34.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314466","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Post_Office_(Far_Rockaway,_Queens)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7890946"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/queens/us-post-office-far-rockaway-88002500/"}
