It also holds a 1939 mural by John Sloan, commissioned by the Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts, which appears to be his only post office mural.","narrative":"This post office on Pondfield Road in Bronxville, New York, was designed in 1936 and built in 1937-38 as part of the federal public works effort that responded to Depression-era unemployment. Eric Kebbon, a consulting architect to the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury, designed it in a simplified Colonial Revival manner. The brick is laid in Flemish bond and trimmed with limestone, under a slate gable roof. The front has a temple-like arrangement of six flat limestone pilasters, a Doric entrance, and limestone roundels bearing federal seals. Inside, the lobby has marble wainscoting, plaster details and a terrazzo floor. Above the superintendent's office hangs a 1939 mural by John Sloan, titled The Arrival of the First Mail in Bronxville in 1846, commissioned by the Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts. The nomination values the building for its refined design and for what appears to be Sloan's only post office mural. A small modern rear addition is considered non-contributing.","period_of_significance":"1937-8; 1939","architect_builder":"Eric Kebbon, Consulting Architect","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"The form describes the building as occupied and retaining a high degree of integrity inside and out, with a small modern non-contributing rear addition. The lobby was modernized in 1967.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.933807-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002459.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002459/e7c5b1e821-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002459/e7c5b1e821-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office-Bronxville_2012-09-23_10-35-59.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">jim.henderson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office-Bronxville_2012-09-23_10-35-59.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"80002788","name":"Lawrence Park Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/lawrence-park-historic-district-80002788/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315469","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Post_Office_(Bronxville,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7890914"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/us-post-office-bronxville-88002459/"}
