Simon.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is an intact representative example of federal architecture produced by Depression-era public works programs. Its simple Colonial Revival design reflects the standardization of post office design after 1930. It is distinguished by two Palladian windows flanking the arched entrance.","narrative":"Located at 35 South Main Street at the southern edge of Warsaw's downtown, this post office is a one-story, five-bay steel frame building faced in red brick laid in common bond. Authorized by Congress in 1931 as part of a New York State program of new post offices, it was begun in 1934 by Murch Brothers on a $90,000 appropriation. The contractor defaulted, and the Maryland Casualty Company supervised completion in 1935. The design came from the Office of the Supervising Architect under Louis A. Simon and follows a modest Colonial Revival approach. Two Palladian windows flank an arched central entrance with original wood doors and lanterns. Similar post offices stand in Peekskill, Riverhead, Massena and Fredonia. Inside, the lobby keeps its yellow tile floor, wood wainscoting, and molded plaster cornice. A two-story brick stairwell added in 1974 on the north side is the only non-contributing element. The building represents standardized federal design of the Depression years.","period_of_significance":"1934-5","architect_builder":"Louis A.
