It includes outbuildings and a family cemetery on 8.5 acres.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be an excellent example of a vernacular hall-and-parlor dwelling common in Piedmont Virginia from the mid-18th to early 19th century. It shows that this plain form was accepted even by a prominent family, and contrasts with the grander Madison homes Montpelier and The Residence. Early 20th-century alterations also form part of its architectural record.","narrative":"Greenway, originally called Prospect Hill, is a working farm on the west side of US Route 15 near the Rapidan River at Madison Mills, Virginia. Its core is a story-and-a-half timber-frame house with brick end chimneys and a hall-and-parlor plan, built about 1780 by Francis Madison, a younger brother of President James Madison. A shed-roofed rear addition followed by 1799. Later owners from the Taliaferro family, several of them local doctors, remodeled the house between 1910 and 1920, adding a porch, side wings and a single front door. A rear wing was enlarged in 1986. The 8.5-acre property also holds a garage said to have housed the first automobile in Madison County, a brick dairy, a corn crib, other farm buildings and the Madison/Taliaferro cemetery. The house was listed for its architecture. It shows a plain vernacular form used by a prominent family, in contrast with Montpelier and The Residence.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1780-1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial: Southern Colonial","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Continues as a private single dwelling and a working farm; the form lists current functions as domestic and agricultural storage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.252237-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/41/6818/41681841/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/88002385.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002385/8518ef1919-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002385/8518ef1919-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Gauemj2017","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greenway.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Gauemj2017</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greenway.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681841","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenway_(Madison_Mills,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712399"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/madison-county/greenway-88002385/"}
