The main block was completed in 1913 and a large rear wing was added in 1938-39.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a distinguished small-scale example of early twentieth century Neoclassical federal architecture in New York State. It is one of thirteen post offices in the thematic group designed under Supervising Architect James Knox Taylor, and its stucco exterior is unique among his New York work. The lobby is remarkably intact, and the building keeps a very high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Facing the village square in Newark, Wayne County, this one-story post office was built in 1911-13 to a design from the office of Supervising Architect James Knox Taylor. The main block is five bays wide, with stucco scored to resemble coursed ashlar, a limestone-clad foundation, a balustraded parapet, and a slightly projecting central pavilion with quoins and tall round-arched openings. A larger flat-roofed rear wing was added in 1938-39 and matches the original in scale and finish. Inside, the L-shaped lobby keeps its terrazzo floor, oak paneling, molded plaster cornice and oak screenline with cast-iron grilles. The building was listed as a distinguished small Neoclassical federal building and as one of thirteen Taylor-designed post offices in the New York thematic group. Its stucco finish is unusual among his work in the state. Congress authorized it in 1908, even though Newark had only 6,227 residents in 1910. The building remains a visible symbol of the federal presence in the community.","period_of_significance":"1911-13","architect_builder":"James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect","architectural_style":"Neoclassical","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, altered, and extremely well maintained; the form lists it as occupied government use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.941072-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002366.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002366/8966422c05-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002366/8966422c05-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"doomsdayklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office%E2%80%94Newark_(14513).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">doomsdayklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office%E2%80%94Newark_(14513).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315455","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Post_Office_(Newark,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7891007"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/wayne-county/us-post-office-newark-88002366/"}
