Its facade curves around a corner lot, which is rare for New York City, and is fronted by a two-story limestone colonnade. It is one of ten New York State post offices designed by Foster and one of five he designed for Manhattan.","narrative":"Cooper Station Post Office occupies the northeast corner of Fourth Avenue and East 11th Street in Manhattan's East Village. Built in 1936-7 as \"Station D Annex,\" it is a three-story building faced in buff brick with limestone trim. Its facade curves around the corner rather than meeting it at a right angle, and a two-story colonnade of seven reeded Doric columns marks the center. Two entrances have original double doors with Art Deco metal grilles and sculpted eagles. Inside, a curved public lobby has red marble columns, marble wainscot, pilasters and floor, and plaster walls and ceiling. William Dewey Foster designed it as a consulting architect for the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury, one of ten New York State post offices by him. It was built during the Depression-era federal works program, and the nomination calls it one of the most important post office buildings in New York City.","period_of_significance":"1936-7","architect_builder":"William Dewey Foster, Consulting Architect","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in good condition, altered but retaining a high degree of integrity inside and out; the original teller screen was partly removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.078521-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002360.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002360/40abfd8626-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002360/40abfd8626-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 4.0","author":"Gmat90","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:United_States_Post_Office_Cooper_Station.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Gmat90</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:United_States_Post_Office_Cooper_Station.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313831","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Post_Office_(Cooper_Station)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q9051836"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/us-post-office-cooper-station-88002360/"}
