It shows the simplified Colonial Revival design typical of 1930s post offices. Its limestone portico is a rare feature for post offices of that decade, and it is one of ten post offices Foster designed in the New York area.","narrative":"Larchmont's post office, at 1 Chatsworth Avenue, is a symmetrical, seven-bay, one-story building completed in April 1938. Its red brick facade has limestone trim and a limestone portico with four Doric piers beneath an entablature inscribed \"United States Post Office.\" William Dewey Foster, a private architect hired as a consultant to the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury, designed it, and Structural Engineering Company of New York City built it. The building reflects the Colonial Revival taste then favored for federal buildings, drawing on Federal, Georgian and Greek Revival forms. Most 1930s post offices of this kind had no portico because of cost limits, so this feature sets it apart; only seven other post offices built in New York State after 1930 have one. Inside, the lobby keeps its red granite wainscot, terrazzo floor, plaster ceiling rosettes, wood screenline, oak customer tables and bronze bulletin cases. It was one of thirteen post offices built in Westchester County during the New Deal.","period_of_significance":"1937-8","architect_builder":"William Dewey Foster, Consulting Architect; built by Structural Engineering Company of New York City","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in use as a post office; the exterior and interior retain a high degree of integrity, with the original lobby largely intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.85734-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002341.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002341/a9e061eaeb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002341/a9e061eaeb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:U.S._Post_Office_Larchmont_NY_Jul_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:U.S._Post_Office_Larchmont_NY_Jul_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315485","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Post_Office_(Larchmont,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707564"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/us-post-office-larchmont-88002341/"}
