It is one of the last post offices designed by James Knox Taylor during his tenure as Supervising Architect, and one of the last individually designed federal post offices. Its exterior retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Johnstown's main post office stands on North William Street at Church Street, facing the Fulton County Courthouse across the way. Built in 1912-13 and opened in 1914, it is clad in smooth coursed limestone on a granite foundation. A monumental portico of four fluted Doric columns dominates the west facade, and engaged pilasters, arched windows and carved swag panels decorate the walls. The design is credited to James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect of the Treasury, and it was among the last post offices he designed in New York State. It was also among the last to be individually designed before the Treasury Department largely abandoned that practice after 1915 as too expensive. The site was bought in 1907, and about $73,000 was spent on construction. A large addition of 1965-66 imitates the original design, though it disturbs the symmetry of the main facade. The lobby was heavily altered, but the exterior remains largely intact and contributes to the surrounding group of civic and religious buildings.","period_of_significance":"1912-14","architect_builder":"James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect","architectural_style":"Neoclassical","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and occupied, with a modern addition on the north side and an extensively altered lobby.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.444202-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002337.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002337/ee25f753ad-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002337/ee25f753ad-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office-Johnstown_NY_Dec_07.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office-Johnstown_NY_Dec_07.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313070","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Post_Office_(Johnstown,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7890980"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/fulton-county/us-post-office-johnstown-88002337/"}
