It reflects the craftsmanship of its owner-builder, Samuel Sadler, and is the only surviving example of his work in the town. It is one of the two most highly articulated Italianate buildings in the town.","narrative":"Built in the early 1870s on North Main Street in Sandy Creek, this red brick house was both home and showpiece for Samuel Sadler, an English-born master mason who settled in the village in 1858. The Italianate residence has a two-story, three-bay main block, a one and one-half story side wing and a one-story rear wing. Its walls use varied brick bonds and colors, and the hipped roofs carry wide cornices with double brackets. A full-width porch, hooded six-over-six windows and a recessed paneled entry add detail. Inside, the original woodwork, staircase and newel post survive. Carpenter Harvey A. Clark assisted Sadler and made the woodwork. The house is the only known surviving example of Sadler's work in Sandy Creek and uses colored brick in a way found nowhere else in the surrounding resource area. A contemporary two-story carriage house on the nearly one-acre lot is still used, and the property continues as a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builder Samuel Sadler (woodwork by Harvey A.
