Architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is architecturally significant as the most intact example in the Sandy Creek multiple resource area of mid-scale post-Civil War vernacular village residences. It shows the typical rectangular massing, side entry plan, wide cornices and clapboard siding of its type. Its only embellishment is the decorative porch posts and cut-out brackets.","narrative":"Built in 1871 on the southwest corner of Harwood Drive and Ridge Road in Lacona, this two-story clapboard house has a rectangular three-bay main block and a slightly lower rear wing, both under shallow gable roofs. A side entry plan, wide cornice boards, one-over-one windows with louvered shutters and a porch with fanciful posts and cut-out brackets define its look. Inside, the original woodwork survives, including a staircase with a turned newel post. The house is considered the most intact local example of a mid-scale post-Civil War vernacular village residence, a type built for village tradesmen or for prosperous farmers retiring to town. It is named for Newman Tuttle, shown as owner on an 1889 map, who moved from a large outlying farm, kept farming on a very small scale and served as a trustee of the Methodist Church. The house stayed in the Tuttle family for many years and has always been a residence. The nominated parcel is about half an acre, what remains of an original eight-acre property.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular post-Civil War village residence","criteria":[],"status_note":"Remains in continuous use as a residence; condition listed as excellent with no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.201333-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002211.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314297","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newman_Tuttle_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7018490"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/oswego-county/tuttle-newman-house-88002211/"}
