Built in 1857 as an Italianate house, it was enlarged and remodelled between 1884 and 1891.","why_significant":"The house is a distinctive and highly ornate local example of Queen Anne architecture, with Eastlake influences and a remarkably intact interior. It is also tied to Clayton H. Delano, founder of the Ticonderoga Pulp and Paper Company, which became the community's most important economic force and the region's largest employer.","narrative":"Standing on a slight knoll at the corner of Lake George Avenue and Father Jogues Place in Ticonderoga, this clapboard and slate-roofed house began in 1857 as an Italianate residence for Joel Holcomb. Clayton H. Delano, who lived there by 1877 and whose wife Annie bought the property in 1878, enlarged it around 1890 with a southern section, a three-story corner tower, porches and stained-glass dormers. The result is a picturesque Queen Anne building with scroll-sawn ornament, sunflower and sunburst motifs, and Eastlake porches. The interior survives largely intact, including a paneled living room, carved L-shaped staircase and terra-cotta fireplace. A carriage barn from 1877 also remains. Delano founded the Ticonderoga Pulp and Paper Company in 1877, an enterprise that grew into a national leader in wood pulp and fine paper. The house is considered one of the village's finest residences and reflects the wealth of its industrialist owner.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne (originally Italianate, with Eastlake influences)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, in use as a private residence, with no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.979714-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88002195.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002195/b994b27ebe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88002195/b994b27ebe-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clayton_H._Delano_House,_Ticonderoga,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clayton_H._Delano_House,_Ticonderoga,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312874","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clayton_H._Delano_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5130229"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/delano-clayton-h-house-88002195/"}
