It holds a cohesive group of mostly one-story vernacular frame houses, plus bungalows and Tudor Revival examples. It also includes some of Cuero's oldest houses, two of them moved from Indianola. It gives a representative sample of the town's historic dwelling types.","narrative":"Two blocks east of Cuero's commercial core, the East Main Street Residential Historic District covers roughly 17 acres along the 400 to 800 blocks of East Main. It contains a cohesive set of modest late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century houses, most of them one-story frame buildings. Center-passage and L-plan houses represent the earlier period, while bungalows and a few Tudor Revival homes show later tastes. Several of the oldest dwellings were dismantled and rebuilt here after coming from Indianola, including the Kleinecke House of 1879 and the Susan Weisiger House of 1886-87. The largest building is the two-story Stadler-Kosbiel House, built about 1891 for lumberman and banker C.L. Stadler, with turned posts and jigsawn brackets. The district is considered significant for its architecture and for giving a more representative picture of Cuero's everyday historic housing than the grander Terrell-Reuss Street district. Its period of significance runs from 1873 to 1936.","period_of_significance":"1873 to 1936","architect_builder":"Fred Mueller, contractor (603 E. Main); C.L.
