Terrell in Cuero, De Witt County, Texas, built around 1880 by an unknown architect or builder. It was the home of Edward Mugge, a German-born banker and businessman who was a principal partner in H. Runge & Co. and was involved in most of Cuero's industrial enterprises.","narrative":"Built around 1880 at 218 N. Terrell in Cuero, this two-story frame house has an L-shaped plan, weatherboard siding, a gable roof with wood shingles and two-over-two double-hung windows. A two-bay, two-story shed-roof porch on the east side has turned posts, jig-sawn balusters and brackets. Elaborate jig-sawn ornament with floral motifs decorates the door and window surrounds, gable ends and eaves, and a polygonal bay with a balustraded porch above projects from the front wing. Roof cresting and corbeled brick chimneys add to the display. The house was built in stages and stands on a large lot north of downtown. It was the residence of Edward Mugge, a German-born banker and businessman who was a principal partner in H. Runge & Co. and took part in Cuero's cotton compress, cotton oil mill and textile mill. Mugge died in 1897, and the house stayed in the family name until the 1940s. It is regarded as perhaps Cuero's most architecturally significant house.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present condition is described as good, with a rear addition; it remains in residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.592076-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/9687/40968770/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/88001994.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001994/f464409a65-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001994/f464409a65-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_Mugge_House,_Cuero,_Texas.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_Mugge_House,_Cuero,_Texas.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"88001996","name":"Cuero Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/cuero-commercial-historic-district-88001996/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968770","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107318602"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/dewitt-county/mugge-edward-house-88001994/"}
