Sarah Street in Cuero, this two-story frame house was constructed for Arthur Burns, son of a prominent DeWitt County cattle rancher. Burns himself held extensive lands in Jackson, Borden and Dawson counties, where he raised livestock. The house reportedly was built by Cate Cudd, foreman of the Burns ranch in neighboring Jackson County. It follows an L plan and has weatherboard siding, a gable roof, and double-hung windows. A two-story, three-bay porch with box columns, turned-wood balusters and a frieze runs along the south side, and a similar porch is at the rear. Other details include art glass in the front entrance, a squared bay on the second floor of the projecting front wing, two brick chimneys with corbeled caps, and cutaway corners on the east side. It is considered a noteworthy local example of Victorian domestic architecture, and it remains in residential use in good condition with minor additions.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; reportedly built by Cate Cudd, foreman of the Burns ranch in nearby Jackson County","architectural_style":"L-plan dwelling (Victorian domestic architecture)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition with minor additions; present use residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.901422-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/10/9688/40968810/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/88001987.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001987/e1565bfdda-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001987/e1565bfdda-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arthur_Burns_House,_Cuero,_Texas.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arthur_Burns_House,_Cuero,_Texas.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"88001997","name":"Terrell-Reuss Streets Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/terrell-reuss-streets-historic-district-88001997/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968810","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001883"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/dewitt-county/burns-arthur-house-88001987/"}
