It has Eastlake detailing, which is quite rare among Cuero residences. It has changed little since it was first built for Elisha Stevens.","narrative":"Built around 1896 at 408 E. Prairie in Cuero, this 2 1/2-story frame house was designed and built by local craftsman Joe Hamilton, according to an article in the Cuero Star. It was constructed for Elisha Stevens. The house has an asymmetrical plan, weatherboard siding, and a hip roof with gables. An L-shaped porch wraps the south and east sides, with turned-wood posts, balusters, and a decorative frieze. Two interior brick chimneys have corbeled caps, and two-story gabled wings have angled corners, jig-sawn brackets and pendants. A small inset porch on the south side has a single doorway and elaborate woodwork. The house was listed for its architecture, since this level of Eastlake detailing is quite rare among Cuero residences. It has changed little since it was built. W.C. Booton bought the property in 1906, and it has changed hands many times since. The house remains residential and is in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Hamilton, Joe","architectural_style":"Eastlake influence","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present condition is described as good and virtually unaltered; present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.5057-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/90/9687/40968790/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/88001984.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001984/f8ebd59018-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001984/f8ebd59018-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elisha_Stevens_House,_Cuero,_Texas.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elisha_Stevens_House,_Cuero,_Texas.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968790","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001876"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/dewitt-county/stevens-elisha-house-88001984/"}
