Esplanade in Cuero, De Witt County, Texas, with two pumphouses and a concrete-lined reservoir, established about 1910. It sits in a mostly commercial area just south of the central business district.","why_significant":"The complex has supplied the city's water since 1910, and its oldest parts are the brick pumphouse facing Esplanade and the concrete-lined reservoir. Few alterations affect its integrity, and it has noteworthy examples of Romanesque Revival-influenced architecture. Its continued operation is credited to the engineering of its original designers and builders.","narrative":"Cuero's City Water Works is a small utility complex at 208 S. Esplanade, just south of the downtown commercial core. Established around 1910, it includes two pumphouses and a concrete-lined reservoir on a lot of less than an acre. The easternmost pumphouse, facing Esplanade Street, is brick with a stucco finish, segmental-arched openings, wood double-hung windows, a hip roof with composition shingles, and a small gable with jig-sawn bargeboard. The second pumphouse is similarly detailed but has a corrugated-metal roof. By 1930 another pumphouse had been built on the south side of the lot. A machine shop built after 1935 and a modern water tower are noted as noncontributing. The complex was recognized for its Romanesque Revival-influenced architecture, its few alterations, and its integrity. It has supplied water for over seven decades, which the nomination credits to the engineering of its original designers and builders. The architect and builder are unknown.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival-influenced","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition described as good; the plant has operated continuously since the early 20th century and the present use is still pumphouse/engineering.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.873602-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/9687/40968762/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/88001956.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001956/632d541269-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001956/632d541269-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DecembertripCityWaterWorks1_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DecembertripCityWaterWorks1_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968762","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000047"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/dewitt-county/city-water-works-88001956/"}
