It was built by the son of an early Ontario County settler and stayed with a Geneva-area settlement family until 1927. The surviving rural setting and three outbuildings add to its value.","narrative":"Built in 1848 on Route 20 between Geneva and Canandaigua, this cobblestone farmhouse was constructed by Thomas Barron after a fire destroyed the earlier frame house on the family farm. Barron chose cobblestone for its fireproof quality and the popularity of the technique in western New York. The walls are laid with carefully selected red sandstone cobbles in diagonal courses, trimmed with limestone quoins, lintels and sills. A central two-story block has a four-column Ionic portico, flanked by one-and-one-half-story wings with smaller porches. Inside, the original moldings, doors, mantels and staircase survive. Remodeling in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries did not seriously alter its character. The 13.3-acre parcel, a remnant of a 184-acre farm, still holds a privy and a shed and garage from the late 1920s. The house is valued as one of the finest Greek Revival cobblestone houses in the region, notable for its craftsmanship and integrity, and for its link to an early Seneca farming family.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900- (specific dates 1848 and ca. 1927)","architect_builder":"Thomas Barron","architectural_style":"Greek Revival, vernacular cobblestone domestic architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the interior and exterior are described as largely intact despite two periods of remodeling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.7918-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88001854.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001854/3c9166a740-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001854/3c9166a740-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Araucana","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_Barron_Cobblestone_House_in_Ontario_County,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Araucana</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_Barron_Cobblestone_House_in_Ontario_County,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320491","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Barron_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7787428"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ontario-county/barron-thomas-house-88001854/"}
