The property also illustrates the conversion of working farms into country estates in the early twentieth century, and its foundations may yield information on colonial agrarian development.","narrative":"Set beside the old Dutchess turnpike, now U.S. Route 44, this two-and-a-half-story brick house with a gambrel roof was built around 1770 for Zaccheus Newcomb, a farmer and landholder originally from Connecticut. Its Flemish bond front, modillioned cornice, twelve-over-twelve windows and corner fireplaces reflect English Georgian detailing carried through New England building traditions. Baptists reportedly organized in the house in 1770. The 33.9-acre property is what remains of a farm of about 200 acres and includes seven outbuildings, two ponds, an apple orchard, stone walls, a capped well and foundations of an early barn and smokehouse. The Newcomb family owned the farm for three generations before selling it in 1859. In 1912 a descendant, Flora Newcomb Brown, bought it and turned it into a country estate, adding Colonial Revival porticos and a porch around 1920. The property is valued for its intact eighteenth-century house and for showing how farms became gentlewomen's estates.","period_of_significance":"c. 1770-1920","architect_builder":"Architect and builder unknown","architectural_style":"Georgian-inspired vernacular (New England tradition) with Colonial Revival alterations","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence; condition listed as good and altered, with integrity described as high.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.664944-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88001704.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001704/e9173c9363-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001704/e9173c9363-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newcomb-Brown_Estate,_Pleasant_Valley,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newcomb-Brown_Estate,_Pleasant_Valley,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317425","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcomb%E2%80%93Brown_Estate","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7017634"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/newcomb-brown-estate-88001704/"}
