It was modeled as a near-exact replica of Grace Church in Massapequa, showing the eastward movement of architectural styles on Long Island. It was also built by the prominent Weeks family, early settlers important to Yaphank's development.","narrative":"St. Andrew's Episcopal Church is a one-story wood-frame church on Main Street in Yaphank, Long Island, built in 1853. It combines a Greek Revival temple front, with pedimented gable and corner pilasters, with Gothic Revival lancet windows, a semi-octagonal porch and a battlemented square steeple. Inside, grain-painted wainscot, pews and doors survive from the construction period. Sympathetic modern additions at the back and side hold meeting rooms, a kitchen and offices. A graveyard behind the church holds many members of the Weeks family. The church was the inspiration of James H. Weeks and his family, who wanted a congregation of their own after leaving the Presbyterian church and who also wished to create a memorial after the death of a young grandchild. Edmund Petty was contracted to build it as a replica of Grace Church at Fort Neck, the home parish of Susan Weeks's family. Unlike that earlier church, it remains highly intact, which underlies its architectural importance.","period_of_significance":"Circa 1853","architect_builder":"Edmund Petty","architectural_style":"Greek Revival-Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a church; the interior ceiling was restored in 1985 and modern wings were added at the back and side.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.79171-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88001442.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001442/be1b2f274b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001442/be1b2f274b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yaphank_St_Andrew%27s_Episcopal_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yaphank_St_Andrew%27s_Episcopal_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322264","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Andrew%27s_Episcopal_Church_(Yaphank,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7586870"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/st-andrews-episcopal-church-88001442/"}
