It is the earliest extant church building in Hamilton County and a rare survivor in the Adirondack Region. Both its exterior and its mid-nineteenth-century sanctuary retain a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1845, this small Baptist church in Wells, Hamilton County, is the earliest surviving church building in the county. It is a single-story, three-by-three-bay frame structure of hand-hewn post and beam construction, covered in narrow clapboards and a steep gable roof. Wide corner pilasters, a full entablature, a Doric-framed double door and a louvered bell tower give it the look of a Greek temple in modest wood form. Inside, raised-panel wainscotting, Doric pilasters, a carved lectern and plaster-on-lath walls remain intact. The congregation formed in 1842 with about 75 members, struggled with debt in the 1850s, and received help from Baptist churches in Saratoga and Glens Falls in 1859. Pews and the pulpit platform were altered around 1900, then returned closer to the original plan in 1931. The ministry continued until 1950, and the building survives as a well-preserved example of rural Greek Revival design in the Adirondack Region.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the county historical society and described as occupied and in excellent, unaltered condition; the Baptist congregation has been inactive since the church closed in 1950.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.335937-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88001440.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318100","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wells_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7981624"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/hamilton-county/wells-baptist-church-88001440/"}
