It has a cemetery to the north.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the oldest intact church building in Granville County, built early enough to include a slave gallery that it still retains. Its Greek Revival finish, especially the crossette-trimmed west facade and the sanctuary, is described as the county's finest and least altered non-residential example of the style. The sanctuary is the earliest intact non-residential interior in the county.","narrative":"Brassfield Baptist Church is a two-story timber-frame meetinghouse beside Route 96 near Wilton, built in the early 1840s and described as the oldest intact church building in Granville County. Its north gable front follows the Greek Revival temple-front pattern, with a flush-board pediment, and the long west side is lined with crossetted window surrounds. Inside, the original high-backed pews, octagonal posts and handrails, flush-sheathed wainscoting and a slave gallery remain, making it the earliest intact non-residential interior in the county. The congregation was constituted in 1823 and bought the present land in 1841 and 1842, when membership was growing quickly. It included both black and white worshippers, and total membership peaked at 201 in 1858. Changes came later: a tin roof in 1887, gallery alterations in the 1920s, new windows in 1937, a 1950s restoration and Sunday School additions in 1956 and 1967. A cemetery begun in 1924 lies on the grounds. The church was recognized for its age, intactness and architectural quality.","period_of_significance":"early 1840s","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use; the sanctuary was restored in the 1950s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.964725-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/7178/47717855/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/88001267.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717855","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brassfield_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4957935"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/granville-county/brassfield-baptist-church-88001267/"}
