It contains an 1840s store, a Greek Revival Masonic lodge from the 1850s, a late 1920s store, and three early twentieth century sheds.","why_significant":"The antebellum store and lodge are the only pre-Civil War non-residential buildings in Granville County that survive as the core of a rural community. They show the range of community life at a crossroads, including lodge, school, store and post office. Both are also unusually well finished Greek Revival buildings for the county.","narrative":"Mount Energy Historic District is a cluster of buildings at a rural crossroads in Granville County, North Carolina. Its core is an antebellum store built in the 1840s and a Masonic lodge raised soon after the lodge was chartered in 1851. Both are timber-framed, clad in beaded weatherboards and finished in Greek Revival detail, which is uncommon among the county's surviving non-residential buildings. The lodge held Masonic meetings upstairs and a school downstairs until the Masons gave up their charter in 1904, and it then became a house. The old store also served as the post office from 1877 to 1900 and became a residence in the 1920s. A replacement store built in the late 1920s by Lonnie R. Hayes and three early twentieth century sheds complete the grouping. Together they are the only pre-Civil War non-residential buildings in the county that survive as the heart of a rural community, and they illustrate small-community life before Oxford's rise.","period_of_significance":"1840s-1937","architect_builder":"Unknown; the late 1920s store was built by Lonnie R.
