It is also tied to Benjamin G. Barnes and Hester Schreiner Harrison, both prominent San Antonio investors. Its original exterior and interiors survive largely intact.","narrative":"Built in 1909 at the corner of West Ashby Place and Main Street in San Antonio's Monte Vista neighborhood, this two-story Classical Revival house was constructed for banker and entrepreneur Benjamin G. Barnes and his wife Ermin. A wood frame structure with a painted masonry veneer, it is dominated by a two-tiered south veranda carried on four Giant Order fluted Corinthian columns, with original beveled glass around the center door. Inside, a coffered entrance hall ceiling, Georgian style fireplaces and a two-run staircase reflect the same style. The architect is unknown, though the house compares well with work by Atlee B. Ayres and other San Antonio architects. The Barneses sold in 1913, and later owners included ranching heiress Hester Schreiner Harrison and the Laird family, who used it for commercial and residential purposes. A 1940s rear addition is sympathetic to the original. The house was listed for its architecture, as a prominent example in a row of Giant Order porch houses.","period_of_significance":"1909","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition excellent and occupied; rehabilitated for use as offices in 1984, with interior well maintained.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.689148-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/11/9711/40971111/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/88001146.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001146/7b48b3848b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001146/7b48b3848b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BarnesLairdHouse_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BarnesLairdHouse_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971111","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001582"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/bexar-county/barnes-laird-house-88001146/"}
