The three houses share similar plans, construction methods and interior details, and their interiors survive with an unusually high degree of integrity. They were built by members of the Jones family, prominent East Hampton builders.","narrative":"Three early nineteenth century houses along Montauk Highway on the west side of East Hampton Village make up the Jericho Historic District. They appear to be all that remains of a nineteenth-century neighborhood known as Jericho, and are now surrounded by twentieth-century suburban houses and woods. Each is a timber-framed, shingled house with a side-entrance plan, internal chimney and Federal style entrance and interior trim, including reeded and panelled surfaces and shelf-like cornices. Two are two stories tall and one is a story and a half. The houses are the Jones House, the Talmage Jones House and the Ezekiel Jones House. They were apparently built by members of the Jones family for their own use, probably between about 1810 and 1830. The Jones family produced several generations of East Hampton builders. Additions have altered the massing of two houses, but their interiors remain largely intact. Old oak and sycamore trees along the highway add to the district's rural character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Built by and for members of the Jones family, East Hampton builders (research incomplete)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Surrounded by twentieth-century suburban houses and woods; two houses have non-contributing additions, and all three have non-historic garages or utility buildings.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.726771-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88001028.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001028/2a3c3d35f3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001028/2a3c3d35f3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jericho-east-hampton.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jericho-east-hampton.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314769","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jericho_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6182165"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/jericho-historic-district-88001028/"}
