It contains 27 contributing principal buildings and 16 outbuildings dating from about 1715 to about 1920.","why_significant":"The district is argued to be architecturally significant as a continuum of vernacular residential architecture in East Hampton from about 1715 to about 1920. It holds relatively intact examples of typical local house types tied to broad periods of village development. Generous setbacks, old maple and elm trees and surviving farm outbuildings preserve a rural character now found in few places.","narrative":"Pantigo Road, the main route linking East Hampton with Amagansett and Montauk, runs through this district in the northeast part of the village. It includes 27 contributing principal buildings and 16 outbuildings, alongside five non-contributing buildings. The houses range from the early eighteenth-century Dayton-Stratton House, a modified saltbox, to modest Colonial Revival, Craftsman and American four-square homes of the early twentieth century. Most are shingled and follow vernacular forms typical of their dates. At least four began as farmhouses, and several keep historic barns and outbuildings. Other houses were built for village mechanics and businessmen, such as a mill operator, a wagon maker and blacksmiths. Three Shingle style houses reflect the nearby summer colony. Deep setbacks and very old maple and elm trees forming a canopy over the road add to the rural character. Few changes have occurred within the district since 1920, which supports its listing as an intact record of local building traditions.","period_of_significance":"c. 1715-c. 1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular residential architecture, with Federal, Queen Anne, Shingle, Colonial Revival and Craftsman influences","criteria":[],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.347428-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88001026.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001026/934c6acf18-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88001026/934c6acf18-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pantigo-road.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pantigo-road.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314787","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantigo_Road_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7131851"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/pantigo-road-historic-district-88001026/"}
