It is one of the few intact exuberant 1880s Victorian houses left in Los Angeles and one of the oldest in the Chester Place and St. James Park neighborhood. It is also of interest as the home of several early Los Angeles educators.","narrative":"Built around 1888 on Scarff Street in Los Angeles, this two-and-one-half story wood frame house is a picturesque example of Queen Anne architecture with Eastlake details. Its exterior mixes lap siding, clapboard, shingles and stickwork, and a wraparound porch has turned columns, a spindled balustrade and a sunburst pediment. A pyramidal roof cap at one corner suggests a tower. Inside, original gas fixtures, plaster ceiling medallions, redwood woodwork, cast iron mantels and pine floors survive. The builder is unknown, though the design probably drew on stock woodwork and pattern books. The house was listed for its architecture, as one of the few intact 1880s Victorian homes in Los Angeles and among the oldest in the Chester Place and St. James Park area. It also housed several early county educators, including school superintendents William W. Seaman and James A. Foshay, and Josephine Seaman, a State Normal School teacher. Careful restoration has kept it a single-family home.","period_of_significance":"Circa 1888","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Queen Anne; Eastlake","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; carefully restored by its owners, with a fiberglass shingle roof, a rear addition removed and the carriage house demolished in 1986 after fire damage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:26.981015-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/88000922.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000922/5f478b6291-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000922/5f478b6291-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Los Angeles","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Machell-Seaman_House,_Los_Angeles.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Machell-Seaman_House,_Los_Angeles.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"91001387","name":"St. James Park Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/california/st-james-park-historic-district-91001387/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859301","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machell-Seaman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6723485"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/machell-seaman-house-88000922/"}
