It was the birthplace and boyhood home of financier and philanthropist George Peabody. Its later use by glue factory employees reflects the town's shift from farming to industry.","narrative":"This Federal-style farmhouse on Washington Street in Peabody was built about 1790-1793 and is the only surviving house of its period in the immediate downtown area. It has a 2 1/2-story main block, a western ell that may predate it, and a rear ell added in the mid-19th century. The exterior was sheathed in vinyl in the 1970s. Original features include a fieldstone foundation, a pedimented entry porch, cased posts and beams, and some early plaster. George Peabody, later an international financier and philanthropist, was born here in 1795 and lived in the house until 1810; it is the only known surviving residence associated with him. The farm later passed into the hands of the Upton family glue business and then the American Glue Company and Eastman Gelatine, and the house was rented to factory workers. That history reflects Peabody's change from an agricultural to an industrial economy. The City of Peabody bought the house in 1986 and has considered a tannery museum there.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1790-1938","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Owned by the City of Peabody since 1986; listed as vacant/not in use, with plans for a small tannery museum.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.535341-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/7948/63794830/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/88000911.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000911/fba79ba719-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000911/fba79ba719-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Peabody_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Peabody_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794830","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Peabody_House_Museum","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5543275"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/peabody-george-house-88000911/"}
