It reflects early 19th-century residential development in an area now dominated by later apartment blocks. Possible archaeological deposits beneath the courtyard may also yield information about the Goodwin household.","narrative":"Built around 1795 at 7 Jackson Avenue in Boston's North End, this three-story, three-bay red brick house was constructed for Ozias Goodwin, a ship captain and ship-owner active in the East India trade. It was the last of four attached houses, and only the party wall to the southwest still shows that arrangement. The walls are load-bearing brick laid in common bond on a granite foundation, under a gable roof with a four-course brick cornice. The Goodwins lived here until 1807, and the house was sold in 1821 to Ammi Cutter, who turned the main entrance toward Jackson Avenue and added a Greek Revival doorway. Much of the interior woodwork dates from before about 1836. The house is valued as a rare surviving late 18th-century brick dwelling in a neighborhood later rebuilt with apartment blocks. Its courtyard may also hold archaeological remains of household life.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1795-1807","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; the form notes it was not owner-occupied for much of its history.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.977273-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/7968/63796839/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/88000908.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000908/1db2aa9c4a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000908/1db2aa9c4a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ozias_Goodwin_House_Boston_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ozias_Goodwin_House_Boston_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796839","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozias_Goodwin_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715804"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/suffolk-county/goodwin-ozias-house-88000908/"}
