Peeps.","why_significant":"The building is argued to be significant under Criteria A and C as a landmark of the 1920s commercial boom in western North Carolina and of the local Masonic lodge. It is the only Neo-Classical Revival building in Waynesville and the tallest commercial building in town. It also represents a group of early twentieth-century Masonic temples in North Carolina downtowns.","narrative":"Rising three stories above downtown Waynesville, this brick building at 114 Church Street was erected in 1927 by Waynesville Lodge No. 259 and designed by Charlotte architect W.H. Peeps. Its Neo-Classical Revival front has a concrete first story with Doric and Ionic columns and upper floors with Corinthian pilasters. The ground floor held offices, the second floor a banquet hall and offices, and the third floor a large Masonic meeting room with a stage and ornate plaster work that remains unaltered. The building went up during the 1920s boom in western North Carolina and cost about $80,000. The Masons lost it through default in 1930. County court met in the banquet room until the new courthouse opened in 1932. Later it served as a professional building, dance hall, theater and community center. It is listed for its role in local commerce and Masonic history and as the town's only example of its architectural style.","period_of_significance":"1927-1930","architect_builder":"Peeps, W.H., Charlotte, architect; Phillips, N.C., Waynesville, builder","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use for business offices, with a Masonic meeting room on the third floor; altered only by replaced first-floor side windows and the front door in a 1973 renovation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.184727-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/86/7207/47720786/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/88000729.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000729/30d641c15f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000729/30d641c15f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"AbeEzekowitz","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Masonic_Hall_-_Waynesville,_NC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">AbeEzekowitz</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Masonic_Hall_-_Waynesville,_NC.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"05001414","name":"Waynesville Main Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/waynesville-main-street-historic-district-05001414/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720786","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonic_Hall_(Waynesville,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6783686"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/haywood-county/masonic-hall-88000729/"}
