The original circa 1660 saltbox portion was built by Zachariah Hawkins, then moved and enlarged circa 1720, with later additions circa 1750 and 1812.","why_significant":"The house is a rare surviving seventeenth-century dwelling in Stony Brook and a well-recognized local landmark. Its additions from 1720 to circa 1812 show the colonial practice of adding wings as a family prospered. It stayed in Hawkins family ownership for more than 270 years, until 1940, and reflects the area's early settlement and farming growth.","narrative":"Overlooking a salt marsh inlet, West Meadow Creek and Long Island Sound near Stony Brook, this house began as a small one-and-one-half story saltbox built around 1660 by Zachariah Hawkins, an early settler and town trustee. His son Eleazer, a carpenter, sea captain and farmer, moved the house about a hundred yards around 1720 and enlarged it. Further additions followed around 1750, and Nehemiah Hawkins added the second floor around 1812. The shingled frame, brownstone foundations, hand-hewn beams, wide-board floors and hand-gouged mantels and chair rails survive, along with a brownstone retaining wall. Seven generations of the Hawkins family farmed the land and owned the house until 1940, when Earl Hawkins sold it. The growth from a one-room cottage to a two-story residence with wings mirrors the family's rising prosperity. As a rare seventeenth-century dwelling in Stony Brook, it is valued as a local landmark of early settlement and agriculture.","period_of_significance":"1660-1825","architect_builder":"Zachariah Hawkins (original portion); later expanded by Eleazer Hawkins and Nehemiah Hawkins","architectural_style":"Colonial vernacular saltbox house with later additions","criteria":[],"status_note":"Private residence being restored by its owners; occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.437712-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/88000727.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000727/5c9291d812-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000727/5c9291d812-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zachariah_Hawkins_Homestead-3.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zachariah_Hawkins_Homestead-3.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322142","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkins_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5685152"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/hawkins-homestead-88000727/"}
