It sits on a lot of under an acre with a pre-1896 shed and a noncontributing garage.","why_significant":"The house is a well-preserved example of a modest vernacular Italianate house enlivened by characteristic ornamental details, with Gothic Revival influence in its central gable. It is also the only unaltered survivor of a group of late 19th-century houses developed on Lowell and Franklin Streets between about 1871 and 1885. It reflects Peabody's residential growth driven by industrial and population expansion.","narrative":"Built in 1874 on the west side of Franklin Street in Peabody, Massachusetts, this 1 1/2-story clapboard house was constructed for Lutetia and Henry Moore on a lot bought from tannery owner Stephen Blaney, who was developing the area. It has a granite foundation, a gabled roof with a broad central gable, a bracketed cornice, hoodmolds over the first-floor windows, double entry doors under a bracketed hood, and a side porch. Dormers were added in 1904. Inside, a center-hall plan, curved stair bannister, wallpaper and early electric fixtures survive. Most neighboring houses have been changed by new siding or additions, which makes this one unusually intact. It is valued as a vernacular Italianate house that borrows details from high-style architecture, and as evidence of how Peabody's tanning-driven population growth led to new streets and housing in the late 19th century. William H. Hill, a local banker and civic leader, bought it in 1896.","period_of_significance":"1874-1904","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Italianate; Mid-19th Century/Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single-family dwelling; the interior is substantially unaltered and retains early electric light fixtures and late 19th-century wallpaper.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.796744-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/90/7947/63794790/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/88000704.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000704/cb28f9aece-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000704/cb28f9aece-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PeabodyMA_MooreHillHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PeabodyMA_MooreHillHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794790","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%E2%80%93Hill_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715721"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/moore-hill-house-88000704/"}
