Architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is significant under Criterion C as a rare and distinctive example of early 20th century multi-family residential architecture in Canton. Few apartment buildings were built in the city despite rapid industrial growth. It is one of only two intact early 20th century apartment buildings in this area of Canton.","narrative":"Built around 1915 at 534 Cleveland Avenue S.W. in Canton, this three-story apartment building has dark tapestry brick walls, a flat roof and precast concrete trim. The Cleveland Avenue front has ball-topped finials, a Flemish-style pediment over a date stone, and iron balconies serving the front living rooms. The south side has two-story bays, and the rear has arcaded brick balconies with wooden railings. Inside, the building was originally divided into six units and later subdivided into twelve. The original front apartments keep gas fireplaces with classical mantels and tile floors. Canton grew from about 31,000 to over 87,000 people between 1900 and 1920, yet few apartment buildings went up, partly because the surrounding southwest neighborhood was made up of small workers' houses near the Timken plant. Only this building and the August Schuffenecher Apartment Building remain intact in the area, which is why it was recognized for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1915","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as multiple dwellings, now with 12 units after subdivision of the original 6; the form says it retains a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:15.159577-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/88000668.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000668/2055e837eb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/88000668/2055e837eb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frances_Apartment_Building,_534_Cleveland_Ave.,_SW,_Canton,_OH_7-23-2010_12-08-28_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frances_Apartment_Building,_534_Cleveland_Ave.,_SW,_Canton,_OH_7-23-2010_12-08-28_PM.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991358","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138685048"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/stark-county/frances-apartment-building-88000668/"}
