It includes an Italianate farmhouse built about 1880, outbuildings, a miller's house and a mill site.","why_significant":"The farmhouse is identified in a 1981 county inventory as one of the two finest Italianate farmhouses in Cabarrus County. The farm is also a well-preserved late nineteenth and early twentieth century agricultural complex with log outbuildings. The mill site and miller's house reflect the rural milling and ginning economy that followed the Civil War.","narrative":"This farm along the Rocky River near Midland, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, covers 371.25 acres and centers on a two-story frame farmhouse built soon after 1880 for John Bunyan Green. The house combines a traditional I-house form with Italianate details, including a two-story gabled porch with sawn balustrades, bracketed eaves and a well-made open-string staircase in the center hall. Around it stand a log barn, three log crib buildings, a granary, a cotton house, a blacksmith shop, a tenant house and a board-and-batten miller's house. Green farmed the land and operated a grist mill, sawmill and cotton gin on the river, a business his son continued until 1934. The first mill washed away in 1908 and its turbine-powered replacement later fell into ruin, leaving only rubble. The property was recognized for its architecture and as a well-preserved example of a post-Civil War farm and milling enterprise.","period_of_significance":"mid-nineteenth century to ca. 1880; 1934","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with agricultural outbuildings and fields; the mills ceased operating in the mid-1930s and only rubble remains at the mill site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.502179-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/7193/47719333/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/88000651.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719333","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bunyan_Green_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18151075"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/cabarrus-county/green-john-bunyan-farm-88000651/"}
